The chart that you can download from CompuServe is alright but it takes time to look up the distances. Try this method in your head: Take your YARDAGE away from the pin, multiply by 4, 5, or 6 (4 if in the fairway, 5 from the rough, or 6 if your in the sand) and use that calculated yardage to select the club to chip with. Select it just as if you were hitting a full club. Example: 51 feet away from the rough. 51 feet is 17 yards * 5 (in the rough) = 85 yards so chip with a SW and take just a little off. Example 12 yards from the sand. Already in yardage so 12 * 6 = 72 yards so use a LW. Example: 40 feet from the fairway is 13 yards * 4 = 52 yards, so go about 5/7ths the distance of a LW chip. If you're significantly below the hole, add a little. Stiff wind at your back? Take off a little. Etc, etc, etc... Also when the calculated distance gets over 100 yards it starts overshooting the target. If the calculated distance is 132 yards use a PW not a 9 iron. If the calculated distance gets over 150 yards consider taking a full swing with the appropriate club. Once you get used to it, this method will generally put you 5 to 10 feet away from the pin.
