The game uses a cool little ticker feature, which displays all the real NBA scores as you play (provided there were any real NBA scores), as long as you are connected to the Internet. The game crashes if you aren't online because the ticker can't load. To fix this problem, go online, start the game, and then set the ticker speed slider to zero.
