The computer seems to have a great deal of trouble dealing with overlapping artillery support, so cluster them often. Any planetary invasion should contain at least one fighter/bomber pair. Hint: When your worlds are being overwhelmed by enemy spacecraft, do not try to build cruisers or battleships, as they will be destroyed by the larger number of attackers. Instead build more durable and economical platforms and monitors until enough of the enemy has been broken up that you can safely build battleships and destroyers.
